Estimated Reading Time: 11 minutes

Getting started as a professional dog walker and maintaining life as a professional dog walker requires so much planning. Aside from the prospect of dealing with a van full of hyper-excited doggo’s waiting to be unleashed in the woods you still need to consider the admin side of your business. This post talks a little about personal experience and general advice to professional dog walkers.

A company name for your professional dog walking business

Don’t be afraid to embrace the power of AI even with a business venture such as being a professional dog walker. AI such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini can be an invaluable tool for brainstorming creative and unique names for a dog walking company. By sharing your business goals, target audience, and desired vibe—whether professional, playful, or trendy—ChatGPT can generate a wide variety of name ideas tailored to your preferences. It can even help refine suggestions based on your feedback, ensuring the perfect name that resonates with your brand identity.

Did you know that AI can generate imagery? Imagine a time when you can simply describe the image you want, and AI brings it to life—it’s both exciting and a little overwhelming. AI is a powerful tool for creating logos, crafting social media-ready visuals, and even offering helpful guidance in areas where you might need support. Whether it’s setting up social media profiles like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, or building a website with platforms like GoDaddy or Wix, AI can make these tasks much easier and more efficient.

Setting up a web domain for your company

Social media profiles

Social media is a powerful tool for running a dog walking business, helping you attract clients, build trust, and showcase your services. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook allow you to share photos and videos of happy dogs, highlight your walking routes, and provide updates on your services.

Posting testimonials and client stories builds credibility, while engaging with local pet communities fosters connections. Social media ads can target potential clients in your area, and tools like Instagram Stories or Facebook Groups create real-time engagement.

Regular posts not only enhance visibility but also establish your business as trustworthy and professional.

Networking

I cant stress enough how important it is to network with other local dog walkers. For me it was heart warming when I began my business because so many of the local dog walkers offered advice as well as recommended me when they were fully booked. I was able to pick their brains and get advice about where to walk as well as buying a van and even help finding trustworthy local mechanics for when my van had issues.

You can also use social media applications like Facebook and search local groups in your area. I’ve often found local communities to be welcoming and helpful for getting clients.

You may also look to visit your local vets & shops and ask if they have community boards so that you can put up a small flyer. I must admit I never found this to be overly helpful however this is just my personal experience it might work a treat for other professional dog walkers.

Business Banking

Separating a business bank account from your personal account is essential for sole traders because it simplifies financial management, helps track business income and expenses, and ensures accurate bookkeeping. It also protects personal assets by clearly distinguishing between personal and business finances, which is crucial for tax reporting and legal purposes. Additionally, a dedicated business account enhances professionalism and credibility with clients and suppliers.

There are lots of options out there but personally I used Petplan Sanctuary’s dog walking insurance. It offers tailored coverage for businesses caring for others’ pets. It includes liability protection for employee injuries and third-party claims, veterinary costs for animals in care, and coverage for animal death, theft, or loss. Additional benefits include advertising/reward costs for lost pets, animals-in-transit coverage, and protection for business equipment and revenue. Policies are customisable with optional interest-free payments, ensuring flexible solutions to meet diverse business needs.

Transporting your fur buddies

I’m not going to lie to you I fell in love with the idea of a branded van when I was starting my dog walking business but some of you may prefer to use your own car. There are various avenues you can explore from local sellers to globals brands such as Arnold Clark who are based in the UK. You also may find quite often dog walkers themselves sell their van for various reasons so again networking in local facebook groups has its benefits.

Equipment

If you’re a professional dog walker, your job isn’t just about loving dogs; it’s about being prepared for every scenario. Whether it’s keeping your furry clients safe, comfortable, or happy, having the right equipment is key. Here’s a rundown of must-have gear and tips for dressing for the weather.

Leads, Crates, and Harnesses

Every professional dog walker knows that no two dogs are the same. Some are small and speedy, while others are large and powerful. Having a variety of leads and harnesses ensures you’re ready for every dog’s needs. Adjustable harnesses are a great choice as they provide a secure fit, reducing the risk of escape. Crates can be lifesavers when transporting dogs in your vehicle, offering both safety and comfort.

Trackers for Peace of Mind

Safety is a top priority, and GPS trackers can provide invaluable peace of mind. Attach these devices to a dog’s collar, and you can quickly locate them if they wander off. Many trackers sync with your phone, offering real-time location updates.

Beat the Heat with Fans

Hot days can be tough for both you and the dogs. Portable fans or cooling mats can help dogs stay comfortable during breaks. For yourself, consider a handheld misting fan to stay refreshed.

Hot Days

On hot days, it’s crucial to keep both yourself and the dogs cool. Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing can prevent overheating, while wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses protect you from the sun. Carry plenty of water for both you and the dogs, and plan your walks during cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late afternoon.

Cold Days

Cold weather requires layers. Start with thermal underlayers and add waterproof, insulated outerwear. Gloves with touchscreen compatibility allow you to use your phone without freezing your fingers. Don’t forget the dogs—many breeds benefit from cozy jackets or sweaters to keep them warm during chilly walks.

Always plan for the worst

As it says on the tin being a professional dog walker can have its perils. My poor Shiloh once had an incident with a shard of glass getting stuck in her pad so in this case imagine having a similar issue and not having the necessary first aid equipment that would greatly assist you until you get your pawsome pal to the vet.

DiggDawg is designed to help manage your business needs letting you focus on the fun stuff such as walking on a warm summers day with the pack and not a care in the world.

“This app has completely transformed my business and making my life so much easier! Prior using this app I was old school pen and paper and never thought I’d transform to online diary. Tax return

Although this movie quote refers to futuristic AI taking over mankind the same can be said for the tax man.

“It can’t be bargained with, it can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity! Or remorse or fear and it absolutely will not stop!… ever… “

James Cameron, The Terminator

It is inevitable that you are going to have to do a tax return so please make sure you are aware of when and what needs to be done. I’ve been there its always a sore one but it needs to be done so be organised. Keep a track of your earnings and don’t overspend – getting yourself into negative situation around your tax return can be harmful to your business and general mental health so embrace the concept of a tax return. My personal advice is the longer your leave it and the less organised you are the harder it becomes.
